Do you possess room that could use a ceiling fan Adding a ceiling fan yourself is relatively easy, if you are simply replacing a light fixture that is already in the correct location. Most of the cabling you need is already around so the only thing is to change the current workbox with one that is made for the weight of a ceiling fan. Hanging your all new ceiling fan on an established box that won't support the additional weight of the fan could result in disaster. Before you start your project, read the guidelines for the fan you have bought, and make sure that you have all of the needed tools.

Should you decide to have the fan on a cathedral ceiling, you will need to get an extension so the fan wont be so high up. As soon as you have every little thing prepared, the foremost thing you must do is make sure that the breaker is turned off so no power goes to the light fixture. Anytime you eliminate the light fixture, check to see if the existing workbox can handle the increased weight. Usually they aren't designed for a ceiling fan, so you will have to add further support. You can do this fairly easily if you are able to gain access to the light fixture from the attic.

All you want to do, is nail a 2x4 between the ceiling rafters, in order that it touches the top of the workbox. Make sure that the 2x4 is secured and then bolt on the box to the wood. If you did it effectively, the weight of the fan should be effectively supported by the 2x4 wood and screws. If you don't have access to the attic, you may have to mount metal cross bracing via the hole in your ceiling woodworking blueprints. It is more complicated to carry out and may not be that protected but its the best option if you have no attic admittance.

It depends on the form of fan you have, many come with a bracket with a J hook while others have a clinging frame. Most of fans require a chain to control the speed of the fan when the wall switch turns the device on or off. If you select to also install a light kit with the fan, both can be regulated by either chain or wall switch.

As soon as you have completed the wiring, all you need to do now is attach the blades. Once this is all finished, it is time to turn the breaker back on to see if it functions.
